Could one conceive of a love that would not be an encroachment on
the freedom of the other? If a person wanted in no way to exert an influence
on the person he loved and consequently refrained from choosing
on her behalf or advising her or influencing her in any way, he would act
on her precisely by that abstention, and would incline her all the more
strongly toward choosing in such a way as to please him. This apparent detachment,
this will to remain without responsibility arouses in the other
an even more lively desire to come closer. There is a paradox in accepting
love from a person without wanting to have any influence on her freedom.
If one loves, one finds one’s freedom precisely in the act of loving, and not
in a vain autonomy. To consent to love or to be loved is to consent also to
influence someone else to decide to a certain extent on behalf of the other.
To love is inevitably to enter into an undivided situation with another.
From the moment when one is joined with someone else, one suffers
from her suffering. If physical pain is involved, in which one can participate
only metaphorically, one strongly feels his inadequacy. One is not
what he would be without that love; the perspectives remain separate—
and yet they overlap. One can no longer say, “This is mine, this is yours”;
the roles cannot be absolutely separated. And to be joined with someone
else is, in the end, to live her life, at least in intention. To the very extent
that it is convincing and genuine, the experience of the other is necessarily
an alienating one, in the sense that it tears me away from my lone self
and creates instead a mixture of myself and the other.
As Alain has said, to love someone is to swear and affirm more than
one knows about what the other will be. In a certain measure, it is to relinquish
one’s freedom of judgment. The experience of the other does not
leave us at rest within ourselves, and this is why it can always be the occasion
for doubt. If I like, I can always be strict and put in doubt the reality
of the other’s feelings toward me; this is because such feelings are never
absolutely proved. This person who professes to love does not give every
instant of her life to her beloved, and her love may even die out if it is
constrained. Certain subjects react to this evidence as though it were a
refutation of love and refuse to be trusting and believe in an unlimited
affirmation on the basis of an always finite number of professions. The ensnaring
love of the child is the love that never has enough proofs, and
ends by imprisoning and trapping the other in its immanence.
The normal, non-pathological attitude consists in having confidence
above and beyond what can be proved, in resolutely skirting these
doubts that can be raised about the reality of the other’s sentiments, by
means of the generosity of the praxis, by means of an action that proves itself
in being carried out.
But if these matters are as we have depicted them, all relations with
others, if deep enough, bring about a state of insecurity, since the doubt
we mentioned always remains possible and since love itself creates its own
proper truth and reality. The state of union with another, the dispossession
of me by the other, are thus not suppressed by the child’s arrival at the
age of three years. They remain in other zones of adult life. This is a particular
case of what Piaget has called displacement [décalage]. The same conduct,
acquired at a certain level, is not yet (and perhaps never will be) acquired
at a higher level. Transitivism, which has been surpassed in the
realm of immediate daily life, is never surpassed in the realm of feelings.
That is why, as the psychoanalysts have shown, syncretic sociability can be
found in the sick to the extent to which they regress in the direction of the
conduct of children and show themselves incapable of making the transition
to praxis, to the selfless, outgoing attitude of the adult.
We might ask what kind of relationship must be established between
the crisis at three years mentioned by Wallon and the Oedipal phase of development
which certain psychoanalysts locate at the same moment and
which accompanies the emergence of the superego, the true “objective”
relation, and the surpassing of narcissism.

We willingly admit that we cannot rest satisfied with the description of the perceived world as we have sketched it up to now and that it appears as a psychological curiosity if we leave aside the idea of the true world, the world as thought by the understanding. This leads us, therefore, to the second point which I propose to examine: what is the relation between intellectual consciousness and perceptual consciousness?
Before taking this up, let us say a word about the other objection which was addressed to us: you go back to the unreflected; therefore you renounce reflection. It is true that we discover the unreflected. But the unreflected we go back to is not that which is prior to philosophy or prior to reflection. It is the unreflected which is understood and conquered by reflection. Left to itself, perception forgets itself and is ignorant of its own accomplishments. Far from thinking that philosophy is a useless repetition of life, philosophy is, on the contrary for us, the agency without which life would probably dissipate itself in ignorance of itself or in chaos. But this does not mean that reflection should be carried away with itself or pretend to be ignorant of its origins. By fleeing difficulties it would only fail in its task.
Should we now generalize and say that what is true of perception is also true in the order of the intellect and that in a general way all our experience, all our knowledge, has the same fundamental structures, the same synthesis of transition, the same kinds of horizons which we have found in perceptual experience?
(MP, The Primacy of Perception and its Philosophical Consequences)

Simmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
a percepção está acima da ciência
que cria verdades temporárias...e abstratas.

Naturally it is necessary to establish here a difference between ideal truth and perceived truth. I do not propose to undertake this immense task just now. I am only trying to show the, so to speak, organic connection between perception and intellection. Now it is incontestable that I dominate the stream of my conscious states and even
that I am unaware of their temporal succession. At the moment when I am thinking or considering an idea, I am not divided into the instants of my life. But it is also incontestable that this domination of time, which is the work of thought, is always somewhat deceiving. Can I seriously say that I will always hold the ideas I do at present—and mean it? Do I not know that in six months, in a year, even if I use more or less the same formulas to express my thoughts, they will have changed their sense slightly? Do I not know that there is a life of ideas, as there is a sense of everything I experience, and that every one of my most convincing thoughts will need additions and then will be, not destroyed, but at least integrated into another whole? This is the only conception of knowledge that is scientific and not mythological.
Thus perception and thought have this much in common—that both of them have a future horizon and a past horizon and that they appear to themselves as temporal, even though they do not move at the same speed or in the same time. We must say that at each moment our ideas express not only the truth but also our capacity to attain it at that given moment.
Skepticism begins if we conclude from this that our ideas are always false. But this can only happen with reference to some idol of absolute
knowledge. We must say, on the contrary, that our ideas, however limited they may be at a given moment—since they always express our contact with being and with culture—are capable of being true provided we keep them open to the field of nature and culture which they must express.
Now this possibility is always open to us, just because we are temporal. The idea of going straight to the essence of things is an inconsistent idea if one thinks about it. What is given is a path, an experience which gradually clarifies itself, which gradually rectifies itself and proceeds by dialogue with itself and with others. Thus what we tear away from the dispersion of instants is not an already-made reason; it is, as has always been said, a natural light, our openness to something. What saves us is the possibility of a new development, and our power of making even what is false, true—by thinking
through our errors and replacing them within the domain of truth.

How can we admit contradictions as ultimate? Perceptual experience is contradictory because it is confused. It is necessary to think it. When we think it, its contradictions disappear under the light
of the intellect. Finally, one correspondent tells me that we are invited to return to the perceived world as we live it. That is to say that there is no need to reflect or to think and that perception knows better than we what it is doing. (MP)

Take me to church - Hozier

The perceived world is the foundation that is always presupposed by all rationality, all value, and all existence. This kind of conception destroys neither rationality nor the absolute. It only tries to bring them down to earth. (Minha Pica, fodástica)
Do these results have any value beyond that of psychological description?
This would be the case, if we could superimpose a world of ideas on the perceived world. But in reality the ideas to which we give our assent are valuable only for a period of our lives or for a period in the history of culture. Evidence is never apodictic, nor is thought timeless, though there is some progress in objectification and thought is always valid for more than an instant. The certainty of ideas is not the foundation of the certainty of perception but is, rather, based on it—in that it is perceptual experience which gives us the passage from one moment to the next and thus realizes the unity of time. In this sense all consciousness is perceptual, even the consciousness of ourselves. (MP, 2. The Generalization of These Results)

naive consciousness never confuses the thing with the manner which it

it is the thing itself which naive consciousness thinks it is reaching,
and not some inner double, some subjective reproduction. It does not
imagine that the body or that mental “representations” function as a
screen between itself and reality. The perceived is grasped in an indivisible
manner as “in-itself,” that is, as gifted with an interior which I will

The body is present to the soul as external things are present; in neither case is it a question of a
causal relation between the two terms. The unity of the human has not yet
been broken; the body has not been stripped of human predicates; it has
not yet become a machine; and the soul has not yet been defined as existence
for-itself. Naive consciousness does not see in the soul the cause of
the movements of the body, nor does it put the soul in the body as the pilot
in his ship.

corpo instrumento de ação

The subject does not live in a world of states
of consciousness or representations from which he would believe himself
able to act on and know external things by a sort of miracle. He lives in a
universe of experience, in a milieu which is neutral with regard to the substantial
distinctions between the organism, thought, and extension; he
lives in a direct commerce with beings, things, and his own body. The ego
as a center from which his intentions radiate, the body which carries them,
and the beings and things to which they are addressed are not confused:
but they are only three sectors of a unique field. Things are things, that is,
transcendent with respect to all that I know of them and accessible to
other perceiving subjects, but intended precisely as things; as such they
are the indispensable moment of the lived dialectic which embraces them.

The world divides in two. There will be the real world as it is outside my
body and the world as it is for me, numerically distinct from the first; the
external cause of perception and the internal object which it contemplates
will have to be separated. The body proper has become a material
mass and, correlatively, the subject withdraws from it to contemplate its
representations within himself. Instead of the three inseparable terms
bound together in the living unity of an experience which a pure description
reveals, one finds oneself in the presence of three orders of events
which are external to each other: the events of nature, the organic events,
and those of thought, which will explain each other. Perception will result
from an action of the thing on the body and of the body on the soul. First
it is the sensible, the perceived itself, to which the functions of extramental
things are attributed; then the problem is to understand how a duplicate
or an imitation of the real is aroused in the body, then in thought.

If by “nature” one means a group of events bound by laws, perception
would be a part of nature, the perceived world a function of the
real world of primary qualities. Then the problem is to designate in the
body the adequate conditions of perception.

and the preferred forms of action and perception can be
treated even less as the summative effect of partial interactions. Thus the
properties of the phenomenal field are not expressible in a language
which would owe nothing to them.

“The universe of immediate experience contains, not more than
what is required by science, but less; for it is a superficial and mutilated
world; it is, as Spinoza says, the world of conclusions without premises.” Kant, sei lá onde...

Put back into the intellectual context which alone gives it
a sense, “sensible consciousness” is eliminated as a problem. The body rejoins
the extension whose action it undergoes and of which it is only a
part; perception rejoins judgment, which subtends it. Every form of consciousness
presupposes its completed form: the dialectic of the epistemological
subject and the scientific object.

reality as an object of consciousness.???

It has seemed to us that
matter, life, and mind could not be defined as three orders of reality or
three sorts of beings, but as three planes of meaning or three forms of
unity.

In brief, the alleged reciprocal action is reducible
to an alternation or a substitution of dialectics. Since the physical, the vital,
and the mental individual are distinguished only as different degrees
of integration, to the extent that man is completely identified with the
third dialectic, that is, to the extent that he no longer allows systems of
isolated conduct to function in him, his soul and his body are no longer
distinguished.

This supposes that he knows it instead of obeys it. For
a being who lives at the simply biological level, it is a fatality. For a being
who has acquired the consciousness of self and his body, who has reached
the dialectic of subject and object, the body is no longer the cause of the
structure of consciousness; it has become the object of consciousness.

Reduced to the
status of object of consciousness, the body could not be conceived as an
intermediary between “things” and the consciousness which knows them;
and since consciousness, having left the obscurity of instinct, no longer expresses the vital properties of objects but their true properties, the parallelism
here is between consciousness and the true world which it knows
directly. All the problems seem to be eliminated: the relations of the soul
and the body—obscure as long as the body is treated in abstraction as a
fragment of matter—are clarified when one sees in the body the bearer of
a dialectic. Since the physical world and the organism can be conceptualized
only as objects of consciousness or as meanings, the problem of the
relations of consciousness and its physical or organic “conditions” would
exist only at the level of a confused thought which adheres to abstractions;
it would disappear in the domain of truth in which the relation of the epistemological
subject and its object alone subsists as original. This would
constitute the only legitimate theme of philosophical reflection.

Perceptual behavior, as science studies it, is
not defined in terms of nerve cells and synapses; it is not in the brain or
even in the body; science has not been able to construct the “central sectors”
of behavior from the outside like something which is enclosed within
a cranial box; it can understand it only as a dialectic, the moments of
which are not stimuli and movements but phenomenal objects and actions.

nor define the soul as the “sense of the body,” the body
as the “manifestation of the soul.”

Our body does not always make sense, and our
thoughts, on the other hand—in timidity, for example—do not always
find in it the plentitude of their vital expression. In these cases of disintegration,
the soul and the body are apparently distinct; and this is the truth
of dualism.

There is always a duality which reappears on one level or another: hunger
or thirst prevents thought or feelings; the properly sexual dialectic ordinarily
reveals itself through a passion; integration is never absolute and
it always fails—at a higher level in the writer, at a lower level in the aphasic.
There always comes a moment when we divest ourselves of a passion
because of fatigue or self-respect.

This duality is not a simple fact; it is
founded in principle—all integration presupposing the normal functioning
of subordinated formations, which always demand their own due.
But it is not a duality of substances; or in other words, the notions of soul
and body must be relativized: there is the body as mass of chemical components in interaction, the body as dialectic of living being and its biological
milieu, and the body as dialectic of social subject and his group;
even all our habits are an impalpable body for the ego of each moment. Each of these degrees is soul with respect to the preceding one, body with
respect to the following one. The body in general is a set of paths already
traced, of powers already constituted; the body is the acquired dialectical
soil upon which a higher “formation” is accomplished, and the soul is the
sense which is then established

The study of perception, pursued without prejudice by psychologists, ends up by revealing that the perceived world is not a collection of objects in the sense in which the sciences use this word, that our relation to the world is not that of a thinker to an object of thought, and that finally the unity of the perceived thing, about which several consciousnesses agree, cannot be assimilated to the unity of a theorem that several thinkers recognize, nor can perceived existence be assimilated to ideal existence.
As a result, we cannot apply the classical distinction of form and matter to perception, nor can we conceive the perceiving subject as a consciousness which “interprets,” “deciphers,” or “orders” a sensible matter whose ideal law it would possess. Matter is “pregnant” with its form, which is to say that in the final analysis every perception takes place within a certain horizon and ultimately in the “world,” that both are present to us practically rather than being explicitly known or posited by us, and that finally the relation, which is somehow organic, of the perceiving subject and world involves, in principle, the contradiction of immanence and transcendence. (MERLEAU-PONTY, The Primacy of Perception and Its Philosophical Consequences, 1. Perception as an Original Modality of Consciousness)

nossa imagem refletida no espelho do elevador.

No teu castelo eu abria as janelas,

meu vento e minha palavra
que ia do quarto pra sala
buscando ar e água.

And finally, death is not deprived of
sense, since the contingency of the lived is a perpetual menace for the
eternal meanings in which it is believed to be completely expressed. It will
be necessary to assure oneself that the experience of eternity is not the unconsciousness
of death, that it is not on this side but beyond; similarly,
moreover, it will be necessary to distinguish the love of life from the attachment
to biological existence. The sacrifice of life will be philosophically
impossible; it will be a question only of “staking” one’s life, which is a

deeper way of living. (Minha Pica)

Legacy e Relevance- Merleau-POnty

Vision and Style

O segundo tema diz respeito à natureza do significado e expressão.

History and Politics

That hopeless dilemma between freedom and determinism is not an accident of twentieth-century European politics, Merleau-Ponty now argued, but the inevitable consequence of Marxism itself, which in truth never had at its disposal the theoretical resources for reconciling human beings with history. Trying to be a Marxist in the middle of the twentieth century, Merleau-POnty concludes, is a much an anachronism as trying to be a Platonist or a Cartesian. "Are you or are you not a Cartesian? The question does not make much sense" (S 17, 11). Like Plato's dialogues and Descartes's Meditations, Marx's works have become classics in the humanist tradition, they pose essential questions and offer deep insights of enduring philosophical significance, but they are no more keys for understanding contemporary political life than the texts of ancient and medieval metaphysics are tools for the advancement of modern science. Actual political and social history have "so completely shifted the perspectives of proletarian revolution that there is no longer much more reason to preserve these perspectives and to force the facts into them than there is to place them in the context of Plato's Repulic" ( AD 133, 93)

Tradução Resumo Cap. "Self and Others"

Tradução Resumo Body and World

since the genesis of the objective body is only a moment in the constitution of the object, the body, by withdrawing from the objective world, will carry with it the intentional threads linking it to its surrounding and finally reveal to us the perceiving subject as the perceived world. (MP, PP 86, 72, 83)

Consciousness of the world in not based on self-consciousness; rather, they are strictly contemporary: there is a world for me because I am not ignorant of myself; I am not concealed from myself because I have a world. (MP, PP 344, 298, 347)

if one's own body and the empirical self are nothing but elements of the system of experience, objects among other objects in the eyes of the true I, how can we ever confuse ourselves with our body, how could we believe that we saw with our eyes what we in truth grasp with an inspection of the mind? (MP, PP 241, 208, 241)

Body and World

The point is not just that the boundary between my body and the environment cannot be drawn sharply from a third-person point of view, for what matters here is not where the boundary lies, but rather that there is a deep difference in principle between myself and my world. (Carman)

The body is not just a causal but a transcendental condition of perception, which is itself not just an inner subjective state, but a mode of being in the world. In short, have no understanding of perception in abstraction from the body and the world. (Carman)

The definition of the object is... that it exists partes extra partes, and that consequently it acknowledges between its parts, or between itself and other objects, only external and mechanical relationships, whether in the narrow sense of motion received and transmitted, or in the broad sense of the relation of function to variable. (MP, PP 87, 73, 84)

Máquinas são extensões de objetos...

the reflex arc idea is defective in that it assumes sensory stimulus and motor response as distinct psychical existences, while in reality they are always inside a coordination and have their significance purely from the part played in maintaining or reconstituting the coordination. (John Dewey, citado por Carman)

the "sensible quality", the spatial limits set to the percept, and even the presence or absence of a perception, are not de facto effects of the situation outside the organism, but represent the way in which it meets stimulation and is related to it. An excitation is not perceived when it strikes a sensory organ that is not "attuned" to it. The function of the organism in receiving stimuli is , so to speak, to "conceive" a certain form of excitation. ... exteroceptivity demands that stimuli be given a shape. (MP, PP 94,79,91)

Introspective psychology detected, on the margins of the physical world, a zone of consciousness in which physical concepts no longer apply, but the psychologist still believed consciousness to be no more than a sector of being, and he decided to explore this sector as the physicist explores his. He tried to describe the givens of consciousness, but without putting into question the absolute existence of the world surrounding it. Together with the scientist and common sense, he presupposed the objective world as the logical framework of all his descriptions, and as the setting of his thought. (MP, PP, 72, 59, 68)

there is not a single movement in a living body that is entirely fortuitous with respect to psychic intentions, not a single psychic act that has not found at least its germ or its general outline in physicological tendencies. (MP, PP 104, 88, 101)

We do not understand the absence or death of a friend until the moment we expect a reply from him and realize there will never be one. (MP, PP 96, 80-81, 93)

To see an object is either to have it on the margin of the visual field and be able to fix on it, or to respond to the solicitation by fixing on it. When I do fix on it, I become anchored in it... I continue inside one object the exploration that just hovered over them all, and in one movement I close up the landscape an open up the object. The two operations do not just coincide by accident: it is not the contingencies of my bodily organization, for example the structure of my retina, that obligue me to see my surroundings vaguely if I want to see the object clearly. Even if I knew nothing of rods and cones, I would know that it is necessary to put the surroundings in abeyance to see the object better, and lose in ground what one gains in figure, because to look at the object is to sink into it, and because objects form a system in which one cannot show itself without concealing others. (MP, PP 81-82, 67-68, 78)

I am aware of my body via the world, I am aware of the world trough the medium of my body. (MP, PP 97, 82, 94-95)

my body appears to me as a posture with a view to a certain actual or possible task. ... If I stand in front of my desk and lean on it with both hands, only my hands are accentuated and the whole of my body trails behind them like the tail of a comet.(MP, PP 116, 100, 114-115)

the body is not an object of which I have an internal image or internal representation, rather "it is polarized by its tasks, it exists toward them, it gathers itself up to reach its goal, and 'body schema' is in the end a way of expressing that my body is in the world" (MP, PP 117, 101, 115)

masturbando com Minha Pica, meu pau transcendental...

background
o campo fenomenal
background subjacente fundado no corpo
isento de julgamentos explícitos
há um mundo de significados
campo transcendental
ocupar o campo fenomenal hábilmente
trata-se de uma atividade incorporada
já se viu isso....continuando...
perspectiva percebida orientando a experiência
comportando
significando coerentemente a unidade do objeto
numa estrutura intencional do corpo
a unidade ou pluralidade dos sentidos
conectados
trabalhando juntos sempre
propriocepção = cinestesia
sinestesia...outra coisa...hahaha
a percepção é intencional e incorporada
um meio-termo entre as dicotomias?????
passividade atividade passividade atividade
dimensão sensorial motora
são momentos distintos porém entrelaçados
e inseparáveis no fenômeno unificado

meu corpo é minha perspectiva do mundo

a meia altura

"The senses are distinct from one another and distinct from intellection inasmuch as each of them brings with it a structure of being that is never exactly transposable. We can recognize this because we have rejected any formalism of consciousness and made the body the subject of perception." (Merleau-Ponty, PP 260, 225, 261)
