The Embryology of the (In)visible

Mark B. N. Hansen

MP............minando distinções do em-si e para-si
receptividade e espontaneidade
atividade e passividade
a distinção consciência e objeto

What was necessary – and what his second turn to science afforded
– was the introduction of a concept of organismor living body
as a unitary phenomenon constituted by the identity of behavior and
development, a unitary phenomenon of which phenomenality and
consciousness would simply be dependent aspects. Hansen

uma nova ontologia da carne
um conceito filosófico de vida

homem ser que percebe
natureza e corpo

“animality and human being are given only together,
in the interior of a totality of being” (N 339/271).

“will emerge from confusion
only by appealing . . . to brute being such as it is unveiled to us by our
perceptual contact with the world” MP< (N 376; RC 137/166)

we must “grasp humanity above
all as another manner of being a body” (N 269/208);

engajamento
investimento ativo no espaço, meio

With this complementarity, we grasp nothing less than the identity
of behavior and phenomenon, ofmovement and perception, that
lies at the heart of Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of life: without
behavior to activate the negativity of life as a problem, there would
simply be no phenomenal dimension at all; and without the natural
negativity as a virtual interiority, there would be no possibility
for such activation to occur in the first place. This is, finally, why
Merleau-Ponty can claim a certain privilege for the human that does
not abjure its immanence within nature. It is only in reference to
the human body that we can truly understand the natural negativity
and the interiority of the living, that we can grasp precisely why
life does not comprise a positive power or spiritual force: “we install
ourselves in perceived being/brute being, in the sensible, in the flesh
where there is no longer a distinction between the in-itself and the
for-itself, where perceived being is emphatically within being” (N
272/210).

Automovimento e excesso: O corpo humano

a presença do futuro no presente
primado absoluto do movimento
a flutuação organizada pelo corpo

We might say, then, that if the living body solves the problem of
the belonging-together of esse and percipere, it is precisely because –
as essentially self-moving – it opens a divergence between itself and
what it sees, a divergence that is filled by the flesh.4 This is why
Merleau-Ponty can assert that there is a correspondence “of my inside
and [the world’s] outside,” just as there is a “correspondence of
its inside and my outside” (VI 179n/136n).

meu corpo resolve o problema...rsrs cadê o preenchimento da carne?rs

ok

ah melhor parar um pouco...

voltando..

a descrição do corpo próprio

 intencionalidade corporal

“I touch myself touching; my body accomplishes a ‘sort of reflection.’
. . . the touched hand becomes the touching hand, and I am
obliged to say that the sense of touch here is diffused into the body –
that the body is a ‘perceiving thing,’ a ‘subject–object’” (MP< S 210/166)

relação de visão e toque - sujeito e objeto o corpo
movimento

o corpo é uma manifestação sensível do mundo

self movement
Umwelt é o corpo e o ambiente
acoplamento estrutural
do ser em seu meio
pertencimento
carne

The
Umwelt is therefore not outside the body, and the body is not other
than the Umwelt; rather, as the passage specifies, the two terms
must be understood as divergences with respect to one another: the
Umwelt (i.e., that part of the environment selected by the body) is
what makes the body self-dimensionalizing, a universal measurant,
and the body is what makes the Umwelt transspatial, not an empirical
“there,” but an absolute “here.” The coupling with an Umwelt
is, then, precisely what clarifies the profound correlation of the body
and the world, the belonging of one to the other that Merleau-Ponty
calls the flesh. (Hansen)

divergência Umwelt-corpo é o inverso da identificaçãoWahrnehmen - Sich bewegen
chiasm entre excesso interno e excesso externo

potencialidade no tecido dos elementos físicos
transformando potencialidade em história natural!

Only the analysis of the human body in its specificity will allow us
to ground the phenomenality–transcendence divergence in the fundamental
chiasm of the living, the chiasm between internal equipotentiality
and external disequilibrium. As a “metamorphosis of life,”
our body emerges as a “body of the mind” (following the felicitous
expression of Paul Val ´ery) (N 380; RC 177/196); it is what places our
life as natural history (as the confluence of morphogenesis and selfmovement)
“before us” and whatmakes it “enveloping in relation to
our ‘thought.’” In this sense, the body holds a certain priority in the
operation of phenomenalization–transcendence constitutive of the
flesh. Specifically, it is that in virtue of which there is an other, hidden
side of things, of the body, of the visible – what Merleau-Ponty so
aptly describes as a “being for the living,” a being that exists insofar
as the living “has an Umwelt.” Precisely because it is a being for the
living, the invisible is “not constituted by our thought, but lived as
a variant of our corporeity, i.e., as an appearance of behaviors within
the field of our behavior” (N 338/271). Such being-lived as a variant
of our corporeity is precisely what defines the opening to the visible –
that is, phenomenality itself – not as the being of a perceived (percipi)
but as the activity of perceiving (percipere) defined through its
participation in the activity of being as living (active esse). (Hansen)

chiasm
imanência x transcendência
fenomenalidade X corpo vivo

Merleau-Ponty’s final work articulates
a philosophy of immanence in which the body’s self-transcendence
simply is its mode of belonging to the world. (Hansen)

Cumbre

Firme, bajo mi pie, cierta y segura,
de piedra y música te tengo;
no como entonces, cuando a cada instante
te levantabas de mi sueño.

Ahora puedo tocar tus lomas tiernas,
el verde fresco de tus aguas.
Ahora estamos, de nuevo, frente a frente
como dos viejos camaradas.

Nueva canción con nuevos instrumentos.
Cantas, me duermes y me acunas.
Haces eternidad de mi pasado.
Y luego el tiempo se desnuda.

¡Cantarte, abrir la cárcel donde espera
tanta pasión acumulada!
Y ver perderse nuestra antigua imagen
arrebatada por el agua.

Firme, bajo mi pie, cierta y segura,
de piedra y música te tengo.
Señor, Señor, Señor: todo lo mismo.
Pero, ¿qué has hecho de mi tiempo?

ah o processo evolutivo natural para a postura intencional...
o que sua lógica está dizendo?

eu não tenho mais espaçooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

tenho sim..

ok
dois tipos de intencionalidade
uma biológica sei lá
Here, in short, Dennett leans heavily on the metaphysics
of evolutionary emergence – and on the continuity of being
it assumes – regardless of what his rhetoricmight suggest. At best, he
is guilty of conflating two distinct concepts of intentionality: on one
hand, as a property of the living; on the other, as a descriptive device
for understanding the living (which also happens to be a property of
certain kinds of living beings). Yet, far from invalidating Dennett’s effort to embrace an evolutionary
perspective, this contradiction merely serves to foreground
the need for an ontologically serious account of evolutionary emergence. (Hansen)

Varela agora
eus
rede de egos
neste caso ontológica, diferente de Dennett
organização autopoiética
????????

One significant consequence of this approach is its vastly different
account of intentionality: for Varela, intentionality is a feature of the
basic cognitive level of selfhood and not something reserved for the
humanmind or some other higher-level emergence. (Hansen)

desejo
eu cognitivo

For Varela as for Merleau-Ponty, it is the self-movement of
the organism that transforms its internal incompleteness (its status
as originary desire or equipotentiality) into the motor of its selfperpetuation,
and it is also self-movement that opens the organism
to the excess of the environment where it discovers nothing less than
the potentiality on which its continuance depends.  Hansen

This is why, in the end, Varela’s approach can only afford a thirdperson
(observational) account of the necessarily first-person (operational)
perspective of the living being, even when the being in question
is the human being – that form of being equipped, biologically,
with themeans (language) to autonomize itself in relation to its basic
cognitive self. His approach develops an epistemology of the living:
an account of the identity and coupling necessary for a given organismtomaintain
itself as living. We arrive at a phenomenology of the
living only when, with Merleau-Ponty, we recognize the philosophical
implications of this epistemology – the way that, for a quintessentially
first-person being like the human, the coupling of body–mind
and world–environment necessarily implicates phenomenology in
being and being in phenomenology. (Hansen)

its over, bye Mark, see you...haha

A Phenomenology of Life

Renaud Barbaras

But the strange unity of these two parallels, that which refers the one to the
other, does not allow itself to be sundered (partager) by them and, by dividing
itself, finally joins the transcendental to its other; this unity is life. One
finds quickly enough that the sole nucleus of the concept of psuchˆe is life as
self-relationship, whether or not it takes place in the formof consciousness.
“Living” is thus the name of that which precedes the reduction and finally
escapes all the divisions which the latter gives rise to. (Derrida)

I would like to show, then, that Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology
is really a phenomenology of life, which means Merleau-Ponty’s
thought completes the project of Husserl’s phenomenology. Indeed,
we can say that Merleau-Ponty’s main purpose, from beginning to
end, is to give sense to the Husserlian lifeworld as it is described
in the Crisis. Thus, Merleau-Ponty’s purpose is to develop a phenomenology
that takes into account the irreducibility of the lifeworld.
In a note in Phenomenology of Perception, he writes,

Husserl in his last period concedes that all reflection should in the first place
return to the description of the lifeworld (monde v´ecu) (Lebenswelt). But he
adds that, by means of a second “reduction,” the structures of the lifeworld
must be reinstated in the transcendental flow of a universal constitution in
which all the world’s obscurities are elucidated. It is clear, however, that we
are faced with a dilemma: either the constitution makes the world transparent,
in which case it is not obvious why reflection needs to pass through the
lifeworld, or else it retains something of that world and never rids it of its
opacity. (PP 419n/365n/425n)

atitude natural X atitude transcendental

The truth is that the relationships between the natural and the transcendental
attitudes are not simple, are not side by side or sequential, like the false
or the apparent and the true. There is a preparation for phenomenology in
the natural attitude. It is the natural attitude which, by reiterating its own
procedures, seesaws (bascule) in phenomenology. It is the natural attitude
itself which goes beyond itself in phenomenology – and so it does not go
beyond itself. (MP, S207/164)

The subject of the lifeworld is precisely life. (Barbaras) adorei!

Leben verbo intransitivo no alemão, no francês tbm
ambígua
viver : estar vivo
experienciando

Here Merleau-Ponty recognizes that if corporeal life transcends itself
in an existential significance that goes beyond natural needs, it is also true that this significance, whatever it may be, is rooted in
corporeal life. In other words, it is life itself that transcends its natural
or biological dimension and involves the whole realm of meaning:
thus, just as we need a sexual body to develop meaningful relationships
with others, so, too, we must be alive and have sense organs to
experience anything and, finally, to perceive a world.

At the beginning of The Structure of Behavior Merleau-Ponty defines
his subject in the following way: “Our goal is to understand
the relations of consciousness and nature: organic, psychological or
even social. By nature we understand here a multiplicity of events
external to each other and bound together by relations of causality”
(MP, SC 1/3).

“because, taken in itself, it is neutral with respect
to the classical distinctions between the ‘mental’ and the ‘physiological’
and thus can give us the opportunity of defining them anew”
(MP, SC 2/4).

By taking the concept of behavior as his starting point,
Merleau-Ponty makes possible an investigation concerning life because
behavior is a more neutral and comprehensive notion referring
to what all living beings have in common. (Barbaras)

a descrição do comportamento
a abordagem fenomenológica!!

The problem is this: the phenomenon is not an appearance, but
rather what is given by being itself. Being exists only as phenomenon,
which is to say, phenomenality is reality. On the other hand, the appearing,
the relation of manifestation, clearly entails a distinction
between what is manifest and the manifestation itself. Even if phenomenality
is autonomous, in the sense that it does not depend on
another reality, it cannot be, qua phenomenality, a new reality. It is
the manifestation of something, a “coming to light,” and this entails
a distinction. (Barbaras)

Moreover, thanks to this rigorous analysis of life, Merleau-Ponty
discovers a new meaning of being, situated beyond the distinction
between the in-itself and the for-itself, thus overcoming the opposition
between consciousness and object, which Merleau-Ponty knows he must abandon. (Barbaras)

The sensible is precisely that medium in which there can be being without
it having to be posited; the sensible appearance of the sensible, the silent
persuasion of the sensible is Being’s unique way of manifesting itself without
becoming positivity, without ceasing to be ambiguous and transcendent. (MP< VI
267/214)

As Merleau-Ponty writes, “In a sense, there
is only the multiple, and this totality that surges from it is not a
totality in potential, but the establishment of a certain dimension”
(N 208/156). We know that the aim of the chapter in The Visible
and the Invisible titled “Interrogation and Intuition” is precisely to
surmount this opposition and to disclose a deeper aspect, which he
calls “wild essence,” “dimension,” and “hinge.” I believe, then, that
this notion of dimension, understood as a system of equivalences,
which is Merleau-Ponty’s concept of being, also derives from his
analysis of life. Vital processes reveal a unity of style par excellence,
that is, a kinship that is not based on any positive principle, such as
an essence. Rather, vital processes reveal a communication among
events beyond the spatiotemporal framework. The central concept of
Merleau-Ponty’s ontology derives from the phenomenology of life. (Barbaras)

carne
não é só toque
é condição de possibilidade do toque
toque
condição real que o corpo vive
a troca que faz ser possível
pode ser chamado, mas não encontrado
o que escapa quando tentamos segurá-lo?
“We are our soul, but we do not have the idea of it;
we only have feeling’s obscure contact with it”  (le contact obscur
du sentiment). (MP, S 181/143–4)

“I can only feel that which touches me”
(U 24/43). Malebranche

“I can construct a ‘pseudo-idea’ of the soul with the notion
of extension” (U 21/40). Malebranche

do corpo do outro, o olhar do outro
relação insustentável
MP reconcilia-os com a relação de troca
do tocar e ser tocado
do chiasma... rs

ontologia do toque
chiasm

a emergência do eu com base no quiasma
carne

the flesh is an ultimate notion . . . it is not the union or compound of two
substances, but thinkable by itself, if there is a relation of the visible with
itself that traverses me and constitutes me as a seer, this circle which I do
not form, which forms me, this coiling over (enroulement) of the visible
upon the visible, can traverse, animate other bodies as well as my own. (VI
185/140)

  Later,

the flesh we are speaking of is not matter. It is the coiling over of the visible
upon the seeing body, of the tangible upon the touching body, which is attested
in particular when the body sees itself, touches itself seeing and touching
the things, such that, simultaneously, as tangible it descends among
them. (VI 191–2/146)

So touched and
touching are not reciprocal relations; they do notmirror one another;
they do not forma circle or a relation of reciprocity. I amnot touched
as I touch, and this noncoincidence is essential to me and to touch,
but what does it mean? It means that I cannot always separate the
being touched from the touching, but neither can they be collapsed
into one another. There is no mirror image, and no reflexivity, but
a coiling and folding, suggesting that there are moments of contact,
of nonconceptualizable proximity, but that this proximity is not an
identity, and it knows no closure. At another moment, he calls the
flesh “a texture that returns to itself and conforms to itself.” This
same sentence that I was reading continues. It is a long sentence, and
it coils back on itself, refusing to end, touching its own grammatical
moments, refusing to let any of them pose as final. Merleau-Ponty
thus attempts to end his sentence this way: “as touching [the body]
dominates themall and draws this relationship and even this double
relationship from itself, by dehiscence or fission of its own mass.”
The flesh is not my flesh or yours, but neither is it some third thing.
It is the name for a relation of proximity and of breaking up. (Judith Butler)

nenhuma unidade resolve a tensão desta relação interna

“for there to be light, there must be, facing me, a representative
being . . . otherwise, my soul will be dispersed and at the mercy of its
states” (U 31/50). Merleau-POnty

So a subject who has only its own feeling to rely
on, whose feeling is given no face, encountered by a representative of
“being,” is one that suffers its own dispersion, living at the mercy of
its own random feeling. What holds those states and feelings together
is not a unity to be found at the level of the subject, but one only
conferred by the object, in its ideality. It is the one addressed by such
feeling who confers intelligibility on one’s own desire. This other,
the one to whom feeling is addressed, the one who solicits feeling,
does so precisely to the extent that the Other represents being. For
that Other to represent being is not for it to be being itself, but to be
its sign, its relay, its occasion, its deflection. (Judith Butler)

a senciência é referencial
vários seres: perspectivas de um ideal

. It is the ideal kernel according to which
real extension [substance] is offered to knowledge” (U 31/50). (MP)

 Thus,
what one feels, if it is a feeling, if it is a sense, if it is love, or even if it
is a touch, for instance, is sustained by the ideality of its addressee,
of the uncapturability of the referent, the irreducibility of the ideal
to any of its perspectival adumbrations. (Judith Butler)

 Merleau-Ponty writes, “the unconscious
. . . is nothing but a call to intelligence, to which intelligence
does not respond, because intelligence is of another order. There is
nothing to explain outside of intelligence, and there is nothing to
explain here, but only something that asserts itself, simply” (U 116).

Here Merleau-Ponty makes clear the sense of the “unconscious” that
he accepts, and it has to do with the way in which the unknown,
and the unknowable, pervades the horizon of consciousness. In this
sense, he is concerned, as was Malebranche, with how an order of
intelligibility that is not fully recoverable by consciousness makes
itself known, partially and enigmatically, at the level of corporeity
and affect. In his view, it would be a mistake to claim, for instance,
that when I fall in love, and am conscious of every phase of feeling
I go through, I therefore understand something of the form and
significance that each of these lucid images has for me, how they
work together, what enigma of intelligibility they offer up. It is necessary,
he writes, to distinguish between being in love and knowing
that one is in love. “The fact that I am in love is a reason not to
know that I am, because I dispose myself to live that love instead
of placing it before my eyes” (U 117). Even if I attempt to see it,
Merleau-Ponty insists, “My eyes, my vision, which appears to me as
prepersonal . . .my field of vision is limited, but in a manner that is
imprecise and variable . . .my vision is not an operation of which I
am the master” (U 118). Something sees through me as I see. I see
with a seeing that is not mine alone. I see, and as I see, the I that I
am is put at risk, discovers its derivation from what is permanently
enigmatic to itself. (Judith)

What follows is that we should
not think that we will be able to grasp ourselves or, indeed, any object
of knowledge, without a certain failure of understanding, one
which makes the grasping hand, the figure for so much philosophical
apprehension, a derivative deformation of originary touch. (Judith)

This does not
mean that we are all touched well, or that we know how to touch in
return, but only that our very capacity to feel and our emergence as
knowing and acting beings is at stake in the exchange. (Butler)

Razones

No vives ya de sinrazones.
¿Tan sola estabas, alma mía?
El alba nueva no traía,
para acunarte, sus canciones.
Llega la luz de otras regiones

sin la hermosura que solía.
Mala alegría es la alegría
que nos abrasa los corazones.
¿Dentro de ti la buscas? ¿Llevas
dentro de ti su llama? ¿Elevas
de tu noche su mediodía?

¿Has de matar todas las cosas?

a chuva é boa,
mas as estrelas são melhores.
e chocolate então..rsrs
agora foi deprimente,
lembrei do "comes, pequena suja,

Estar Só é Estar no Íntimo do Mundo

Estar Só é Estar no Íntimo do Mundo

a cintilante substância do sítio

É o Que a Gente Leva Desta Vida...

aprendizado
automática aquisição do corpo
hábitos corporais
 “The acquisition of a habit
[including our habits of speech and thought] is indeed the grasping of
a significance, but it is the motor grasping of a motor significance”;
“it is the body which ‘understands’ in the acquisition of habit.”
 “incorporate them
into the bulk of our own body” through unreflective processes ofmotor
sedimentation and our own spontaneous corporeal sense of self
(PP 167–9/143–4/165–7)

body schema, de novo...
hábito do corpo sedimentado

“the anonymous alertness of the senses” (PP 191/164/190)

a filosofia ficará mancando?

ahhhhhhhhhhhhh...............
esqueceu da fenomenologia da percepção ...descrição?
ok, não..

“The limping of philosophy is its virtue,”
he writes, in contrasting the philosopher with the man of action by
contrasting “that which understands and that which chooses.” “The
philosopher of action is perhaps the farthest removed from action,
for to speak of action with depth and rigor is to say that one does
not desire to act” (EP 59–61/59–61).

As opposed to
men of action, the philosopher, says Merleau-Ponty, is never fully
engaged in a practical “serious” way in what he affirms. Even in the
causes to which he is faithful, we find that “in his assent something
massive and carnal is lacking. He is not altogether a real being”
(EP 60/60).

o corpo silencioso
o corpo antes do cogito

Moreover, the apparent limitation that bodily perceptions
are vague, corrigible, or ambiguous is reinterpreted as usefully true
to a world of experience that is itself ambiguous, vague, and in flux.(Richard Shusterman)

“to return to
that world which precedes knowledge, of which knowledge always
speaks” (PP iii/ix/x).

Phenomenology is therefore “a philosophy for
which the world is always ‘already there’ before reflection begins –
as an inalienable presence; and all its efforts are concentrated upon
reachieving a direct and primitive contact with the world, and endowing
that contact with a philosophical status” (PP i/vii/vii).
Philosophy is perforce a reflective act, but phenomenology’s “radical
reflection amounts to a consciousness of its own dependence on
an unreflective life which is its initial situation, unchanging, given
once and for all” (PP ix/xiv/xvi). “It tries to give a direct description
of our experience as it is” in our basic prereflective state (PP i/vii/vii),
pursuing “the ambition to make reflection emulate the unreflective
life of consciousness” (PP xi/xvi/xvii). Such philosophy “is not the
reflection of a preexisting truth” (PP xv/xx/xxiii), but rather an effort
“of describing our perception of the world as that upon which our
idea of truth is forever based” (PP xi/xvi/xviii); it aims at “relearning
to look at the world” with this direct, prereflective perception
and to act in it accordingly (PP xvi/xx/xxiii). Such primary perception
and prereflective consciousness are embodied in an operative
intentionality that is characterized by immediacy and spontaneity
(S 111–16/89–94). “Thus the proper function of a phenomenological
philosophy” would be “to establish itself definitively in the order
of instructive spontaneity” (S 121/97); and this basic, embodied “order
of instructive spontaneity” constitutes a worldly wisdom and
competence that all people share. Merleau-Ponty therefore concludes
that the special knowledge of the philosopher
is only a way of putting into words what every man knows well. . . . These
mysteries are in each of us as in him. What does he say of the relation
between the soul and the body, except what is known by all men who make
their souls and bodies, their good and their evil, go together in one piece?

Merleau-Ponty’s important point, then, is that any acceptable explanation
of the brain activity underlying and giving rise to our comportment
requires that the organism be actively involved in seeking
a grip on the world and that it constantly receive feedback as to its
successes and failures, which guide and refine its tendency to move
toward a maximal grip on its environment. The brain basis of comportment,
therefore, cannot be an equilibrium formed in the brain
alone, but a tendency toward equilibrium of the active organism
in the situation that reflects the meaning of that situation for the
organism.(Dreyfus)

physical stimuli act upon the organism only by eliciting a global response
which will vary qualitatively when the stimuli vary quantitatively; with
respect to the organism they play the role of occasions rather than of cause;
the reaction depends on their vital significance rather than on the material
properties of the stimuli. Hence, between the variables upon which conduct
actually depends and this conduct itself there appears a relation of meaning,
an intrinsic relation. One cannot assign a moment in which the world acts
on the organism, since the very effect of this “action” expresses the internal
law of the organism. (MP, SC 174/161)24

“How significance and intentionality could come to dwell
in molecular edifices or masses of cells is something which can
never be made comprehensible, and here Cartesianism is right” (PP
403/351/409).

The phenomenon of motivation, Merleau-Ponty believes, show
us how our mental life is directly grounded in a world that is not necessarily
conceptually constituted – something not possible as long
as it looked as if our thoughts could hook up to the world only rationally
or causally. The phenomenology of motivation thus promises
to move us beyond the Cartesian picture with all that it implies.

cachoeira cai do céu
bom...

The perceptual foundations of judgment become clearer when we
consider aspects or gestalts that shift even while the discrete parts of
objects remain fixed. As Merleau-Ponty says, “perception is not an
act of understanding. I have only to look at a landscape upside down
to recognize nothing in it”  (PP 57/46/54).

a percepção não está fundamentada nas sensações

“there is a significance of the percept that has no equivalent in the universe
of the understanding, a perceptual milieu that is not yet the objective
world, a perceptual being that is not yet determinate being” (PP 58/46–7/54).

Intellectualism ignores the indeterminacy of perception
and helps itself uncritically to a view of the world as described
by the physical sciences: “the real flaw of intellectualism lies precisely
in its taking as given the determinate universe of science”
(PP 58/47/54). Only by bracketing that fully objective description of
the world, the description that aspires to a view from nowhere, as
it were, and stepping back from the theoretical achievements of scientific
theory to our ordinary situated perspective on our familiar
environment can we recover the abiding naivet´e that constitutes the
positive organizing principle of our conscious lives. For the world as
given in perception is not the world as described by science, nor even
the world as described in prescientific cognition: “Perception is not
a science of the world, it is not even an act, a deliberate taking up of
a position; it is the background from which all acts stand out, and is
presupposed by them” (PP v/x–xi/xi).
Perception understood as a background condition of intelligibility,
the intelligibility both of judgments and of the misbegotten concept
of sensation, is an inheritance we are already intimately familiar
with as children, long before we are in a position to comprehend the
world or ourselves from the depersonalized standpoint of science:
The child lives in a world he unhesitatingly believes to be accessible to
all around him; he has no consciousness of himself or of others as private
subjectivities, nor does he suspect that we are all, himself included, limited
to a certain point of view on the world. . . . Men are, for him, empty heads
turned toward a single self-evident world. (PP 407/355/413)

o body schema
formado ao longo da vida
o background

for if it is true that I am conscious of my body via the world, that it is the
unperceived term in the center of the world toward which all objects turn
their face, it is true for the same reason that my body is the pivot of the
world: I know that objects have several faces because I could walk around
them, and in that sense I am conscious of the world by means of my body.
(PP 97/82/94–5)

aderência
entrelaçamento
intencionalidade motora
sua normatividade
body schema....de novo

my body has a grip on the world when my perception offers me a spectacle as
varied and as clearly articulated as possible, and when my motor intentions,
as they unfold, receive from the world the responses they anticipate. This
maximum distinctness in perception and action defines a perceptual ground,
a basis of my life, a general milieu for the coexistence of my body and the
world. (PP 289–90/250/292

Our constant self-correcting bodily orientation in the environment
constitutes the perceptual background against which discrete sensory
particulars and explicit judgments can then emerge: “our body
is not the object of an ‘I think’: it is an ensemble of lived meanings
that moves to its equilibrium” (PP 179/153/177).

Just as the perceived world endures only through the reflections,
shadows, levels, and horizons between things . . .
so the works and thought of a philosopher are also made
of certain articulations between things said.
Merleau-Ponty

All of what Goethe says about nature as the barbarous principle of Good and Evil, we really have to say that on the basis of the moment when Nature is neither pure thing, nor God, nor the simple “collection of the objects of the senses”—when there is an internal connection in the multiple which is not that of the divine understanding. Someone will say: you explain nothing, you observe. But to explain is always: to bring Nature back to God or to bring it back to the spectacle of man—not to see nature. In reality, what one has to learn is that being is that, it is precisely not to explain. (MERLEAU-PONTY, 1958)

[1958]

Nisso consiste o poder, a genuína liberdade.
Suponham a frase: "Jacques Derrida morreu."

But this hiatus between my right hand touched and my right hand touching, between my voice heard and my voice uttered, between one moment of my tactile life and the following one, is not an ontological void, a nonbeing: it is spanned by the total being of my body, and by that of the world; it is the zero of pressure
between two solids that makes them adhere to one another. My flesh and that of the world therefore involve clear zones, clearings, about which pivot their opaque zones, and the primary visibility, that of the quale and
of the things, does not come without a second visibility, that of the lines of force and dimensions, the massive flesh without a rarefied flesh, the momentary body without a glorified body. When Husserl spoke of the horizon of the things—of their exterior horizon, which everybody knows, and of their “interior horizon,” that darkness stuffed with visibility of which their surface is but the limit—it is necessary to take the term seriously. No more than are the sky or the earth is the horizon a collection of things held together, or a class name, or a logical possibility of conception, or a system of “potentiality of consciousness”; it is a new type of being, a being by porosity, pregnancy, or generality, and he before whom the horizon opens is caught up, included within it. His body and the distances participate in one same corporeity or visibility in general, which reigns between them and it, and even beyond the horizon, beneath his skin, unto the depths of being.

There is equal weakness in blaming ourselves alone and in believing only in external causes. In one way or another we will always miss the mark if we do. Evil is not created by us or by others; it is born in this web that we have spun between us—and that is suffocating us. What new men, and sufficiently tough, will be patient enough to remake it truly? The conclusion is not rebellion, it is “virtù” [la virtu]31 without any resignation. A disappointment for whoever believed in salvation, and in a single means of salvation in all realms. Our history, where space reappears, where China, Africa, Russia, and the West are not advancing at the same pace, is a decline for whoever believed that history, like a fan, is going to fold in upon itself. But if this philosophy of time was still a reverie born of the old distress, why then should we judge the present from such a height in its name? There is no universal clock, but local histories take form beneath our eyes, and begin to regulate themselves, and haltingly are linked to one another and demand to live, and confirm the powerful in the wisdom which the immensity of the risks and the consciousness of their own disorder had given them. The world is more present to itself in all its parts than it ever was. In world capitalism and in world Communismand between the two, more truth circulates today than twenty years ago. History never confesses, not even its lost illusions, but it does not begin them again.

estou cansada
de tantos pensamentos

Estou tão cansada,

pra quê?
prefiro dormir.

Passa (...)
Dormir, despir-me deste mundo ultraje,
Tenho náusea carnal do meu destino.
Quase me cansa me cansar. E vou,

Ah, haver coisas!
Ah, haver seres!
Ah, haver maneira de haver seres
De haver haver,
De haver como haver haver,
De haver...
Ah, o existir o fenómeno abstracto — existir,

Ah, abram-me outra realidade!
Quero desimaginar-me deste mundo feito com garras,
Depois encerrem-me onde queiram.
Meu coração verdadeiro continuará velando
Pano brasonado a esfinges,
No alto do mastro das visões
Aos quatro ventos do Mistério.

I am the fleshless being who neither sleeps nor thinks. As soon as these
poor fools draw away from instinct, I lose my way in caprice, in the uselessness

lose myself in this Faust who seems to me sometimes to understand me
in a wholly different fashion than he should, as if there were another
world than the other world! . . . It is here that he shuts himself in and
amuses himself with what there is in the brain, and brews and ruminates
that mixture of what he knows and does not know, which they call

The movement of ideas comes to
discover truths only by responding to some pulsation of interpersonal life,
and every change in our understanding of man is related to a new way he
has of carrying on his existence. If man is the being who is not content to
coincide with himself like a thing but represents himself to himself, sees
himself, imagines himself, and gives himself rigorous or fanciful symbols
of himself, it is quite clear that in return every change in our representation
of man translates a change in man himself. Thus it is the whole history
of this half century, with its projects, disappointments, wars, revolutions,
audacities, panics, inventions, and failures, that we would have to
evoke here. We can only refuse this unlimited task. (MP, Man and Adversity)

With these reservations, we propose to acknowledge that our century
is distinguished by a completely new association of “materialism” and
“idealism,” of pessimism and optimism, or rather by the overcoming of
these antitheses.

materialistas
espiritualistas
natureza humana
humanismo?

Our century has erased the dividing line between “body” and “mind,” and
sees human life as through and through mental and corporeal, always
based upon the body and always (even in its most carnal modes) interested
in relationships between persons. For many thinkers at the close of
the nineteenth century, the body was a bit of matter, a network of mechanisms.
The twentieth century has restored and deepened the notion of
flesh, that is, of animate body.
In psychoanalysis, for example, it would be interesting to follow the
development from a conception of the body which for Freud was initially
that of nineteenth-century doctors to the modern notion of the lived body.
Did not psychoanalysis originally take up the tradition of mechanistic
philosophies of the body—and is it not still frequently understood in this
same way today? Does not the Freudian system explain the most complex
and elaborate behavior of adults in terms of instinct and especially sexual
instincts, that is to say physiologically, in terms of a composition of forces
beyond the grasp of our consciousness or even realized once and for all in
childhood prior to the age of rational control and properly human relationships
to culture and to others? Perhaps things seemed this way in
Freud’s first works, and for a hurried reader; but as his own and his successors’
psychoanalysis rectifies these initial ideas in contact with clinical
experience, we see the emergence of a new idea of the body which was
called for by the initial ideas.
It is not false to say that Freud wanted to base the whole of human
development upon the development of instincts; but we would get further
if we said that from the start his works overturn the concept of instinct and
break down the criteria by which men had previously thought they could
circumscribe it. If the term “instinct” means anything, it means a mechanism
within the organism which with a minimum of use ensures certain
responses adapted to certain characteristic situations of the species. Now
what defines Freudianism is surely to show that in this sense man has no
sexual instincts, that the “polymorphously perverse” child establishes a socalled
normal sexual activity (when he does so) only at the end of a difficult
individual history. Unsure about its instruments as it is about its goals,
the power to love wends its way through a series of investments which approach
the canonical form of love, anticipates and regresses, and repeats
and goes beyond itself without our ever being able to claim that what is
called normal sexual love is nothing but that. The child’s attachment to
his parents, so powerful at the beginning as to retard that history, is not itself
of the instinctual order. For Freud it is a mental attachment. It is not
because the child has the same blood as his parents that he loves them;
it is because he knows he is their issue or because he sees them turned
toward him, and thus identifies himself with them, conceives of himself in
their image, and conceives of them in his image. For Freud the ultimate
psychological reality is the system of attractions and tensions which attaches
the child to parental images, and then through these to all the
other persons, a system within which he tries out different positions in turn,
the last of which will be his adult attitude.

It is not simply the love object which escapes every definition in
terms of instinct, but the very way of loving itself. As we know, adult love,
sustained by a trusting tenderness which does not constantly insist upon
new proofs of absolute attachment but takes the other person as he is, at
his distance and in his autonomy, is for psychoanalysis won from an infantile
“erotic attachment” [“aimance”] which demands everything at all
times and is responsible for whatever devouring, impossible aspects may
remain in any love. And though development to the genital stage is a
necessary condition of this transformation to adult love, it is never sufficient
to guarantee it. Freud himself described an infantile relationship to others which is established through the intermediary of those regions and
functions of the child’s body which are least capable of discrimination and
articulated action: the mouth, which does not know whether to suck or
bite—the sphincteral apparatus, which can only hold in or let go. Now
these primordial modes of relationship to others may remain predominant
even in the genital life of the adult. In this case the relation to others
remains trapped in the impasses of absolute immediacy, oscillating between
an inhuman demand, an absolute egotism, and a voracious devotion
which destroys the subject himself. Thus sexuality and, more generally,
corporeality, which Freud considers the soil of our existence, is a
power of investment which is at first absolute and universal. This power is
sexual only in the sense that it reacts immediately to the visible differences
of the body and the maternal and paternal roles. Instinct and the physiological
are enveloped in a central demand for absolute possession which
could not possibly be the act of a bit of matter but is of the order of what
is ordinarily called consciousness.
And yet it is a mistake to speak of consciousness here, since to do so
is to reintroduce the dichotomy of soul and body at the moment Freudianism
is in the process of contesting it, and thus to change our idea of
the body as well as our idea of the mind. “Psychical facts have a meaning,”
Freud wrote in one of his earliest works. This meant that no human behavior
is simply the result of some bodily mechanism, that in behavior
there is not a mental center and a periphery of automatism, and that all
our gestures in their fashion participate in that single activity of explication
and signification which is ourselves. At least as much as he tries to reduce
superstructures to instinctive infrastructures, Freud tries to show
that in human life there is no “inferior” or “lower part.” Thus we could not
be further from an explanation in “terms of the lower part.” At least as
much as he explains adult behavior by a fate inherited from childhood,
Freud shows a premature adult life in childhood, and in the child’s sphincteral
behavior, for example, a first choice of his relationships of generosity
or avarice to others. At least as much as he explains the psychological
by the body, he shows the psychological meaning of the body, its hidden
or latent logic. Thus we can no longer speak of the sexual organ taken as
a localizable mechanism, or of the body taken as a mass of matter, as an
ultimate cause. Neither cause nor simply instrument or means, it is the vehicle,
the fulcrum, and the steadying factor of our life. None of the notions
philosophy had elaborated upon—cause, effect, means, end, matter,
form—suffices for thinking about the body’s relationships to life as a
whole, about the way it meshes into personal life or the way personal life
meshes into it. The body is enigmatic: a part of the world certainly, but offered
in a bizarre way, as its dwelling, to an absolute desire to draw near the other person and meet him in his body too, animated and animating, the natural face of the mind. With psychoanalysis mind passes into body as, inversely, body passes into mind. ( ah, o mesmo texto anterior,

Even socialist forms of property would not dispense us from having a social psychology, which would measure or verify the realization of socialism in human relations. A true socialism will be realized only when it will dare to give a voice to those who have always remained quiet, and will reveal to the light of recognized knowledge human relations about which only literature and testimonials had up to now informed us.
