The phenomenon of motivation, Merleau-Ponty believes, show
us how our mental life is directly grounded in a world that is not necessarily
conceptually constituted – something not possible as long
as it looked as if our thoughts could hook up to the world only rationally
or causally. The phenomenology of motivation thus promises
to move us beyond the Cartesian picture with all that it implies.
